Genesis 2:4-25 “Biblical Creation from Another Angle”
Reading: Isaiah 45:9, 10; Psalm 139:13-16 February 6, 2022 I. A Second Creation Account? A. Genesis 1-2:3 gives the chronological account. B. Genesis 2:4-25 gives a mankind-centric account. 1. Early earth account (history) (v4-6) 2. Man (v7, 15-17, 18, 21-25) 3. The garden (paradise) (v8-14) 4. The animals (v19, 20) II. Mankind-Centric Creation A. Early earth had no man (cultivate) laboring in it (v4-6). B. God’s Garden is the place God places man (v8-14). 1. Real trees: life and the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 3:22; Rev. 22:2) C. The animal-kind differ from mankind (v19, 20). III. Mankind A. Creation of the male (v7) 1. “Formed”: like a potter forming from clay (Isaiah 29:16; 45:9; Jeremiah 18:6; Romans 9:20, 21) 2. Given life from God (Ps. 139:13-16; I Cor. 15:45; I Tim 2:13) B. Man’s responsibility (v15-17) 1. Tend and care for the garden 2. Do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. C. Creation of the female (v18-23) 1. Helper (aid) to the male 2. Formed from man (I Cor. 11:8) D. Creation of marriage (v24, 25) 1. Marriage: the union of man and woman 1a. Exclusive: one man/one woman 2a. Complementary union 3a. Joyous, delightful, pleasurable 4a. Reflects the union between Jesus and the Church (Eph. 5:31, 32) IV. Implication: Man is the Pinnacle of Creation but Still Under God. A. Man depends upon God for existence and subsistence. 1a. Man’s being and life is in God’s control. B. Man is accountable to God. 1a. God made man for purpose and will judge man according to that purpose. C. Man is subject to God. 1a. This world is God’s world and man must live according to the laws of this world. 1b. Moral laws 2b. Natural laws
